Study

Migrant milieus in Germany

06/2008 - 08/2008
During the period of 2006 and 2008 Sinus Sociovision conducted a representative study about the social environments and lifestyles of people with migrant backgrounds in Germany. This study reveals a highly faceted image of the migrant population and relativizes many negative clichés widespread in Germany.

People with a migrant background aged 14 and older.

Core section:
2072 people with a migrant background aged 14 and older (structured interviews)

BZgA-specific section:
An additional 600 young people between 14–17 were surveyed

Methodology / Research design

Representative sample generation in co-operation with the Statistisches Bundesamt [Federal Office of Statistics] as well as the Statistische Landesämter [State Offices of Statistics] on the basis of code numbers from the micro-census of 2005;
fully standardized, personal-oral interviews, duration approx. two hours.
Core section
Questions about fundamental attitudes, lifestyle, through which those surveyed can be assigned to the circles in question (factor analysis, cluster analysis);
additional questions about the willingness to integrate, knowledge and use of the language, leisure activities, religious commitment etc.
BZgA-specific study section – survey of 14–17-year olds
additional questions for young people about sexual experiences, sexuality education, the use of media, leisure activities etc.

In light of the study findings, the discourse about integration in Germany appears to be focused too narrowly on a deprivation outlook, with the result that the migrants’ resources of cultural potential, as well as their assimilation achievements and their rootedness in the midst of society tend to be underestimated.

It was the goal of the study to get to know and understand the everyday world of migrants, their values, life goals, desires and expectations for the future in a manner that is as free of prejudice and is as authentic as possible. An important conceptual element was not to see the ethnic origin as a segmenting and predetermining preliminary filter. The influence of ethnicity was analysed ex post. A total of 2072 people with a migrant background aged 14 and over were surveyed. Additional survey of young people
In a special study section for the BZgA an additional 600 young people aged between 14 and 17 were interviewed about their sexual experiences, sexuality education, media use, leisure activities etc.

The goal was to identify access paths to young people with migrant backgrounds while taking the different social environments into account.

The publication of the results of the BZgA-specific section of the study is planned for the end of 2009.
